Frettens Handle Major Yacht Sponsorship Deal

Frettens have played a key role in securing a sponsorship deal for yachtswoman Dee Caffari as she attempts a new world first. Frettens worked with local accountants Princecroft Willis on behalf of Dee Caffari Racing Ltd in the seven figure deal.

The 33-year-old sailing star is to attempt to set a new record by becoming the first woman to sail solo, non-stop, around the world in both directions. Last May, Caffari achieved the first stage of the challenge by sailing around the world against prevailing winds and currents. In 2008, she will attempt the same feat as part of the Vendée Globe race, but in the other direction. Aviva plc, the world’s fifth biggest insurance group and the largest in the UK with operations including Norwich Union and the RAC, is sponsoring the yachtswoman’s campaign.

The Vendée Globe is a single-handed, non-stop race around the world without assistance. 27 navigators will set sail from France towards the three great capes, marking the southern tips of the African continent, Australia and America. Contested by the ocean sailing’s elite, this race is regarded as one of the world’s most gruelling.

Caffari comments “Sailing events don't come any tougher than the Vendée Globe; I couldn’t attempt such a challenging sailing event without Aviva’s terrific support. We were under tremendous pressure to complete the contract within an extremely tight timescale, so I am appreciative of Matthew Fretten and Martin Aldridge not only for handling the deal so well, but also for their speed and efficiency in doing so."

Frettens’ Commercial Partner, Matthew Fretten, handled the legal aspects of the Aviva sponsorship for Dee Caffari Racing. He also introduced Martin Aldridge, a Partner with Princecroft Willis and himself a former world windsurfing champion, to deal with the financial side.

Matthew Fretten said ”It is significant that Dee’s team chose to work with a local lawyer and accountant in preference to regional or City firms. Frettens and Princecroft Willis are proud to be part of the team behind this outstanding solo performance.”
