Who are we looking for?
We are a people business first and foremost. Our job is to make law accessible and understandable to our clients. An excellent technical expert who can’t understand their clients’ needs and clearly explain the best course of action, is not always a good lawyer.
Our lawyers are all experts in their field, but what sets our team apart is their excellent communication and ability to work collaboratively with clients and colleagues. These attributes are at the very top of the list of things we look for in our recruitment process.
What does the placement involve?
You will work with various legal departments that will provide a great grounding for all areas of law.
Learn more about the work involved here.
Where will placements be based?
We have two offices, one in Christchurch and one in Ringwood. As a placement student, you may be placed in either of these locations.
Training Contracts?
Following completion of their placement year, students may have the opportunity to skip the first year of Frettens' Graduate Scheme and begin a training contract with us. Here, you would study for and sit the Solicitor Qualification Exams (SQE) alongside your work.
The 12-month placement is the perfect opportunity for you to show us that you can be one of the key members of our team in the future. It’s also plenty of time for you to establish whether the way we work suits you, and whether you can see yourself working with us long-term.
Find out more about our Graduate Scheme here.
LPC options are also available.
What is Frettens like?
We are a progressive and ambitious firm and have worked hard to create an environment that is flexible, fulfilling, and fun. That's why we've been accredited by Best Companies.
Every year, we ask our team to anonymously tell us what they think of working here. The results and feedback help us to establish what we can do to improve the environment, working conditions and generally make people feel a lot more involved within the organisation.
Last year, we were praised for our flexibility, work-life balance, trust, communication and excellent IT infrastructure. You can read more about what it is like to work at Frettens here.
At Frettens, you get the best of both worlds. You get to experience a broad range of private and commercial work, but also get to know all of your colleagues in a collaborative environment.
We are a full-service firm but aren’t a huge corporate. We currently have just over 90 staff and believe we provide the best alternative to the large regional firms in the conurbation for both clients and colleagues.

What do you get?
As well as the opportunity to work with some great people and gain invaluable experience in a bright, supportive environment, you will also get:
- Competitive salary
- 20 days’ holiday (plus bank holidays)
- Additional day off for your birthday (if on a working day)
- Fantastic IT infrastructure
- Regular social events
- Subsidised parking
