Frettens Solicitors’ specialist Employment Team held their annual seminar on 1st October covering the highly topical subject of ‘Managing Change’. Over 85 of the area’s employers attended the event, where employment law experts Jennifer Maddocks and Kate Fretten spoke on the legal implications of making changes within the workplace and Lisa Pierson from the Colour Works gave a lively presentation on the importance of effectively managing people during periods of change.
Jennifer Maddocks says “2008 has been a volatile year for many businesses, with economic factors leading to reorganisations and a variety of changes. Subsequently, HR professionals and business owners have a minefield of legislation, regulation and best practice to comply with. Our seminar offered practical advice, covering the implications of making redundancies, restructuring and considerations when changing an employee’s role or contract of employment. We also dealt with the HR effects of trimming costs in the workplace, including in-sourcing, out-sourcing and managing issues such as performance and absence.”
Kate Fretten adds “We were delighted that The Colour Works joined us at our seminar. Lisa offered a unique perspective and delivered some very useful guidance on managing individuals during an interesting, engaging talk. The legal requirements of changes in the workplace can be very complex, so this behaviour driven approach was an effective compliment to our legal advice.”
Lisa Pierson comments “The first step on the path of personal and team development requires a firm understanding of self, both strengths and weaknesses. The ‘soft’ stuff is actually the ‘hard’ stuff! Recognising the importance of ‘people skills’ is vital to achieve successful and effective changes. It is refreshing to work with organisations which embrace this. My sincere thanks to Frettens for inviting me along.”

Frettens Employment Team were also delighted to be selected to speak at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development’s (CIPD) annual lecture on 8th October.
