The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is to undertake a comprehensive new research project into the scale of pregnancy and maternity discrimination in the workplace. The project will investigate employers’ practices towards employees who are pregnant or on maternity leave, and look at the experiences of these employees, to gather evidence on the extent, causes and effects of pregnancy and maternity discrimination. This information is intended to enable the EHRC and the Government to ‘shape the most appropriate response’.

Employment Partner Kate Fretten says, “Despite sex discrimination legislation being in place for nearly 40 years now, there is still evidence that a lot of discrimination takes place against women who are pregnant or on maternity leave. The likely outcome of this project is that that the legislation will be looked at to protect women more.”
