Making Moving Day Manageable

  • Posted

Here is an essential guide to make your moving day manageable:

  1. The dreaded utility provider calls: Council tax, gas, electric, water, sewerage, tv licence, phone, internet, tv, home insurance… You can make the calls after exchange, before completion, to start the ball rolling.
  2. Arrange for someone to take care of the pets and the kids on moving day (and maybe the day after too!)
  3. Strictly speaking, the fridge should be defrosted and all appliances unplugged – plan in advance!
  4. Ensure that the kettle, phone charger, scissors, first aid kit, tools for putting furniture back together and a takeaway menu are in easy access on moving day!
  5. Packing: Leave stuff in drawers – use masking tape and a carrier bag to keep items sealed in then just remove the tape and replace the drawer in your new place. Leave clothes on hangers and tie about 10 hangers together with elastic bands – it’s quicker to move them from one wardrobe to the next and it frees your suitcases for packing other items.
  6. When you take furniture apart, keep the screws and washers in a freezer bag, tie a knot and use masking tape to secure it to the furniture so you can find it quickly when you need to put it back together.
  7. Label boxes and large furniture with tags stating the room they are to go into (as well as contents) – on moving day everything will find its way to the right room ready for unpacking later.
  8. Don’t forget the contents of your loft, garage and garden shed!
  9. Leave your new postal address in a note to the new owners of your property – ask if they can re-direct any mail.
  10. Pack your cleaning supplies last – you may want to clean up your old home a bit once it’s empty and probably want to spruce up your new home before the furniture comes in!
  11. Once you are in the new property… Find out where the mains supplies are for water, gas etc and check your smoke alarms work and have battery power
  12. Change the locks – there could be any number of keys out there floating around that match your lock.
  13. Once you’re settled in, don’t forget to notify your bank, doctor, dentist, the kid’s schools, DVLA & vehicle registration, electoral role, newspaper deliveries and memberships of your new address.
