A recent survey of employers, undertaken after a year has passed since the introduction of the right, has shown that only 1% of fathers have taken up shared parental leave (SPL). The survey of more than a 1,000 parents and 200 businesses found that taking up SPL was dependent on an individual’s personal circumstances, particularly on their financial situation and the paternity pay on offer from their employer. It also depends largely on the mother’s feelings towards SPL, with 55% saying in the survey that they would never want to share their maternity leave.
Comment
"The outcome of the survey is not a surprise. It was felt by many, including us, when the new SPL right was introduced that take up would be low. The government is looking at ways to try and increase the take up and are also planning to introduce the right for grandparents in 2018," says Employment Associate Paul Burton.
