New Frettens Sensory Room for Autism Wessex

  • Posted

The Partners at Frettens are delighted to announce that they have donated a sum of money to Autism Wessex to fund a sensory room in one of their residential homes in New Milton. Autism Wessex, is the firm's 2014 charity of the year.

Autism Wessex will be creating a sensory room in Penny Farthing House in New Milton which is home to a number of adults with severe autism. The sensory room will be in their existing conservatory, which doesn’t currently have a function and will include the installation of a bubble tube, a light projector with effects, fibre optic lighting balls and soft play style lounger and flooring. The room will be named the Frettens Sensory Room.

This will benefit the residents at Penny Farthing house and also a neighbouring residential home, called Greenways, by providing a calming environment to reduce tension and providing a stimulus to develop or balance sensory experiences. Sensory rooms have also been shown to help people with autism to improve concentration and alertness and also aid in communication, social and relationship building skills.

The donation is just under £5,000 and the sensory room is something that has been on Autism Wessex’s wish list for a long time. One of the firm's Partners, Kate Fretten, comments "It is great to be able to put this money to a really good cause and this is just the type of project that we had hoped to be able to contribute to. A small group of our staff are looking forward to visiting the sensory room once it is completed – a number of our team have been involved in raising our money for the charity this year and we have been able to raise over £3,500 for Autism Wessex through a football quiz, sale of old IT equipment and a sponsored quarter marathon. We are really proud of this wonderful achievement and it will be great to see the ways in which Autism Wessex are putting this money to such good use."
