We are delighted to announce that Katelyn Webster, James Privett, Zoe Burcombe and Harvey Paveley have all moved onto the second year of our Graduate Scheme!

After joining the firm as Graduate Legal Assistants last year, the group will now begin the SQE and each take on a role as a Trainee Solicitor.

As part of the scheme, in Years 2 and 3, they’ll gain experience in multiple seats across the firm and study to sit the Solicitor Qualification Exams (SQE) alongside their work.

“A huge congratulations to Katelyn, James, Zoe and Harvey for completing their graduate year and moving on to the SQE.” said Matthew Fretten.

“We couldn’t be happier with the first cohort on our new graduate scheme. All four of them have worked extremely hard and integrated really well with the team over the past year.”

Investing in young lawyers

Matthew continues “Our graduate scheme is an absolutely crucial part to our continued growth plans.

Since overhauling our old trainee programme, we have attracted some outstanding graduates who will, I am certain, become excellent lawyers in the coming years.

By identifying and supporting these talented young individuals, we will maintain our excellent levels of client service for years to come.”

How does the Graduate Scheme work?

Back in 2022, Frettens launched the Graduate Scheme with the aim to continue the firm’s growth and provide one of the best schemes for law graduates on the South Coast.

The course itself takes place over 3 years, with students completing Year 1 in a Graduate Assistant role and Years 2 and 3 in a Trainee position.

In terms of benefits, the scheme is fully funded, pays a very competitive salary, includes additional time off to study and more.

Although applications are now closed for 2023, you can find out more about the scheme here.

Katelyn on moving on to Year 2

Katelyn, who completed her legal assistant year in our Family Department, said: “My time at Frettens so far has been amazing and I’ve been so well supported throughout, so I’m definitely excited to begin my second year.

As I’ve said before, the firm have set out a clear path in front of me, something you don’t always get elsewhere, so I know exactly where I’m headed and how to get there.

I’m really looking forward to taking on and gaining experience in a trainee role and working towards qualifying as a solicitor!”

James' thoughts on training & SQEs

James Privett said: "My first year at Frettens has been fantastic; I've gained such a vast amount of knowledge in the Commercial Property Team and all those around me have been so unbelievably supportive.

Completing a year as a legal assistant before embarking on the SQEs was of great importance as it has allowed me to adjust from university to working life.

I’m now moving onto my second year of the graduate scheme and very much looking forward to taking the position as a trainee, tackling the SQEs and progressing my career even further at the firm."
